Every guide on RankedShopping starts from the same process before a single word gets written. This page is the long version of the one line on our About page: no hands-on testing, no paid placement, and a research method built around 50+ lb dogs specifically. Here is exactly what that means.
Where a guide starts
Every pick begins with the manufacturer’s own specifications — listed weight capacity, materials, dimensions — checked against at least two independent retailer listings, not just the manufacturer’s own page. Manufacturer copy tends to round up on weight capacity and durability claims, so we treat it as a starting claim to verify, not a fact to repeat.
Why owner reviews get weighted by age, not just volume
A product with 4.7 stars and thirteen thousand ratings can still fail large dogs specifically, because most reviews get written in the first week — before a 70lb dog has had six months to test a seam or a buckle. We read for complaint patterns that show up in reviews written months after purchase — stitching that lets go, hardware that corrodes, straps that stretch out — and weight those more heavily than five-star reviews written on unboxing day.
How a top pick gets chosen
A pick has to clear three things before it makes a guide: a manufacturer-stated weight capacity that comfortably covers 50lb+ dogs, not one that is technically met at the product’s absolute limit; a pattern of owner reviews across more than one retailer that does not show a recurring failure mode; and a price that is reasonable for what the product actually does. Guides are structured the same way every time — a quick answer, a comparison table, and a “why we like it / best for / watch for” breakdown for every pick — so two guides are never scored against different standards.
What this process doesn’t include
RankedShopping does not buy and physically test products. The About page and every guide’s disclosure line say this plainly, and this page is not trying to soften it. Guides are researched from public specifications, retailer listings, and owner reviews, and written and edited with AI assistance, under an editorial process that checks specs against source listings before publishing. Nothing here should be read as “I used this with my own dog” — the site does not claim that, and neither does this page.
Keeping guides current
Products get discontinued, prices move, and manufacturers change materials without renaming anything. High-traffic guides carry a dated “Recent updates” note near the top recording exactly what changed and when, rather than an unlabeled “last updated” date with nothing behind it. If a pick looks out of stock, discontinued, or no longer matches its description, the fastest way to flag it is the contact page below.
